Powhatan Democratic Club Members Register Voters
Astoria, N.Y. - Brunch and Happy Hour became civic engagement events this weekend as members of the Powhatan Democratic Club organized a pub crawl to register voters. They stopped at a variety of bars and restaurants frequented by Astorians, reaching potential voters while sampling the food and drinks.
Club members registered new voters before November's general election, as well as existing voters who wanted to register as a Democrat before next year's statewide primary.
“Voter registration drives usually mean sitting at a table on a street corner for hours as people pass you by,” said the club’s Outreach Director Rod Townsend. “By bringing our clipboards to the brunch and happy hour crowds, we reached more people and had a lot of fun. At each stop along our pub crawl, we spread awareness of our organization and met new people.”
Founded in 1901, the Powhatan and Pocahontas Regular Democratic Club represents the 36th Assembly District, Part A, in Astoria.
